In other media [edit]

Korra is faced in The Fable of Korra video gamey, which takes place in between the second and third seasons of the serial publication.[48] She has her bending abilities taken by from her at the beginning of the back and she has to find them Eastern Samoa it progresses.[49] She is the only The Legend of Korra character, likewise Naga and Jinora, to make an appearance in the game's storey mode, which earned it criticism.[50]

In March 2022, Bryan Konietzko posted artwork of Korra and Asami embracing, entitled Turtle-duck's egg Date Nighttime. The art was announced to be sold as an exclusive print for The Caption of Korra / Incarnation: The End Airbender Tribute Exposition at Gallery Nucleus with its proceeds given aside Konietzko to a LGBTQ self-destruction prevention hotline.[51] [52] After Saame-sex union was declared legal in all 50 states of the U.S., Konietzko posted a rainbow version of the nontextual matter.[53] Korra and her predecessor Aang were featured on a print available for attendees of the 2022 San Diego Humorous-Nobble.[54] [55]

Korra appears in the epilogue of RE:Anime lover moving picture Incarnation: The Last Airbender: Agni Kai in a silent cameo appearance, portrayed by Katrina Rosita, partially adapting the events of "Sozin's Comet" with the dispute of Katara accidentally killing Azula, as explained to Korra by an older Katara.[60] [61]

She also appeared as a playable grapheme in Jukebox All-Whizz Brawl.[62]

Creation and concept [edit out]

Bryan Konietzko's interest in soldierlike arts influenced him to hook inspirations from several female MMA fighters for the design of Korra's character, one inspiration organism Gina Carano. In gain, she was indirectly divine by unmatchable of Bryan Konietzko's sisters. Korra was also designed to be an inversion of Aang, the title character of the preceding history Avatar: The Last Airbender. Instead of the young, sacred Aang, Korra is a more physical character who has perturb grasping the spiritual English of being the Avatar piece being able to already bend three elements at the age of Little Jo. In direct contrast, Aang takes a piece to master each of the elements, but connects with the feeling international instantly.[63] Korra's name was settled long after her character was fanciful. Konietzko and DiMartino couldn't harmonize to a discover for her until they knowledgeable "Cora", the name of a hotel operator's weenie. The gens was kept, and only changed in spelling.[64]

The creators felt the second season was built around Korra becoming much in-tuned with her spiritual side, reinforcing their impression that a big spirit variant of herself would be the "last manifestation".[65] DiMantino wrote that Korra's lack of usage of the Embodiment State during the third season was purposefully done to show her connection with Raava as being full-fledged, her developed savvy that type of exponent should be reserved for the "most extreme circumstances."[66]

On with Asami Sato, Korra is half of the basic major acknowledged LGBT couple in western children's animation.[67] Regarding Korra's sexuality, Konietzko admitted that the idea of a romantic relationship between Korra and Asami had been discussed past the creators during production of flavour one, but had not been given more slant overdue to assumptions that the show would not be permitted to openly depict a same-sex relationship. As growth of the go two seasons went on and Korra and Asami's friendship progressed, "the more the approximation of a romance 'tween them organically blossomed for [the creators]," then the show started hinting at the possibility of such a relationship. In the end, Konietzko and DiMartino chose to openly depict Korra and Asami's relationship in the series finale because they didn't want to regret not doing so after the serial terminated. While quiet having limits on what could be shown, Jukebox was supportive of the relationship when approached.[68]

Design [edit]

Korra as she appears in Volume 4.

Before draftsmanship the part, Konietzko and DiMartino discussed her athleticism and physicality which factored into the early illustrations of Korra. It took the pair and Joaquim State Santos's combined efforts to finalize her character designing.[69] In the pilot (2012) episode "Welcome to Democracy Metropolis", Korra is introduced as a teenager wearing Fire Nation attire over her traditional Water Tribe garment. She is in brief seen wearing it again during a flashback in the twenty-five percent season. Konietzko thought it was "fun to play with" the familiar Water Tribe getup. After her defeat of Amon, she underwent an getup transfer, gaining an asymmetrical top and sleeves.

Korra for the first gear three seasons is depicted with long hair that is usually kept in a ponytail, though she has it down on several occasions such as when attending festivities, during her final struggle with Unalaq, while incoming the Avatar Commonwealth after existence poisoned by the Red-faced Nelumbo nucifera and during her final battle with Zaheer soon afterward.[70] Korra is so rarely seen with her hair down that DiMartino wrote that whenever the quality had her hair down, "you bang something bad has happened."[71] She maintains the hairstyle for the succeeding three years as she recovers until shortly after regaining her mobility, at which point she cuts it.[72] The hairstyle change was revealed in September 2014 by Konietzko, WHO wrote that the character was returning to her roots aside betting a bobsled cut similar to the one she was given by Dos Santos in his unconventional concept for her, Konietzko adding that the alteration was carrying on a tradition in the Avatar franchise to have hairstyle changes over the course of a serial publication.[73] [74] Korra's first clothing in the fourth season is purposely designed to mirror that of her Urine Tribe attire in the preceding seasons, consisting of a sleeveless shirt and baggy pants, DiMartino finding it paramount that information technology resemble her prior clothing due to the length for which she wore IT.[75] Korra gains another getup middle through the quaternary temper. This outfit's boots are based on an existing pair of FALSE suede cloth compressed wintertime buckle boots.[76]

Voice [edit]

Korra's voice is provided by Janet Varney. Varney stated that she loved the character, describing her Eastern Samoa being "complicated" while thinking that this was due to her age and responsibilities and summarized her experience voicing Korra as having been "such a privilege to be a part of". Varney understood the criticism of her character and felt up IT was one of the compelling aspects of the series, As Korra was someone that "you're not always looking up to" and mentioned Pane while saying that a character is more stimulating to her when they are flawed. Responding to being questioned about pessimistic reception for the serial in indiscriminate, Varney admitted to preferring to live in a world of "unicorns and rainbows" and only pay attention to the positive feedback she received since she believed she would non "do a better job on the show if my feelings are crushed by someone who's just angry at me for no reason."[77] Friends with Grey DeLisle, who soft Azula in the freehanded series Incarnation: The Last Airbender, Varney remembered her advice about the fandom where DeLisle told her to make up ready for her "life to change."[78]

Characterization [edit]

Personality and characteristics [blue-pencil]

Unlike her predecessor Aang, Korra is described by her creators as "very tough, selfsame headstrong, and not scared to get into a fight."[79] Although she is talented, her stubborn and illegal-headed personality prevents her from easily learning airbending or conjunctive with the Spirit World.[80] The Embodiment traditionally has the greatest trouble mastering the component diametrically opposed to the Embodiment's personality. For instance, Avatar Roku – a firebender – took longer to learn waterbending and Aang – an airbender – took thirster to see earthbending. The waterbender Korra, but then, had little trouble with firebending just had considerable trouble with airbending, a situation noted to be spiritual and non elemental.

Her best Friend and animal guide is a polar bear-dog named Naga, whose strength helps Korra out of many dangerous situations. Although disorderly polar bear dogs were originally feared and hunted by Water Tribes, Korra is the first soul to ever tame one.[81] Korra is good friends with her pro-bend teammates, the brothers Mako (her romantic interest in seasons 1 and 2) and Bolin. She also develops a strong friendship, and later romance,[45] with Asami Sato, a wealthy industrialist. Korra has beefed-up relationships with the family of her previous lifespan: Having learned waterbending from Katara and then airbending from Tenzin, Tenzin's children Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo admire her as an aged baby, and Kya and Bumi affect her as a Quaker. Korra is generally on good terms with her own parents, but has little contact with her uncle or cousins, whom she considers unearthly (and her beginner considers suicidal). Korra is singular amongst her past lives in that she is technically royal line: her male parent Tonraq was eligible to comprise the primary of the Northern Water Tribe before being banished and relocating to the South.

Korra's character develops and matures during episodes 11 through 12 of the first season when she is confronted with insulation from her main three bending skills, leaving her just with airbending, which she had unlocked to save Mako from Amon. By and by, she connects to her spiritual self through Aang. Once the connection to her Avatar predecessors is settled, Aang is healthy to bestow energybending upon Korra (too arsenic her main three bending skills lost earlier). Although Korra is able to bend all four elements, while organism subject of incoming the Avatar State, Korra is still in the appendage of perfecting her airbending skills as well American Samoa having a true connection and understanding of her spiritual self to complete her training as a fully realized Avatar. Hyphenated with the events of seasons 2 and 3 placing her in life and dying situations, the former having her no more capable to contact her ago lives for advice, Korra begins to lose post unhealthiness stress aside the events of Book Four: Balance patc sceptical her abilities as the Avatar to maintain balance aft those she faced have each disrupted the purchase order she was struggling to protect in solid ways. But ultimately, once able to let extend to of the pain she went done and realizing the significance to her previous suffering, Korra returns to her usual individual piece becoming a more compassionate person from her ordeals.

Soldierlike arts mastery [edit out]

"I can't believe your sweet-tuned father was reincarnated into that girl. She's tough as nails."

Maya Lin Beifong (The Legend of Korra)

Korra has impeccable athleticism and stunting, shown being competent of simultaneously lifting Tenzin and his children with proportional informality. She has surprising speed that go by on with her legerity and reflexes, which make her a skilled combatant in and of themselves. Her physical strength and stamina makes her capable of tearful crosswise large bodies of water for days, or airlift and throw significantly larger opponents. She can punch with enough force to break smoothing iron pipes or shatter large chunks of ice launched at her. Her dexterity and balance allows her to skillfully dodge a large barrage fire of projectiles and easily jump on across long distances and over high obstacles from a stationary position. She is shown to be quite flexible, able to bend and twist effectively enough to attack from respective angles or squeeze through binding spaces.

The series' creators consulted a professed warlike artist in the design of the show's fighting system.[82] Under the White lily' vigilant protection, Korra was educated altogether known world fields, and trained by the topper martial arts instructors. She was a fast-learner and considerable prodigy, seemingly driven. Eventually, she sought out training from Aang's original teachers—Katara, Zuko, and Toph—but had great difficulty under the mentorship of Aang's son, Tenzin. Her predecessor lived with personal grief over the genocide of his people, and his personal failure as The Incarnation in his inability to prevent the century long world war that kaput millions of lives. Helium had vowed "never-again" would he allow himself to be unprepared in his subsequent live(s), and Korra unconsciously channels this curse word in her insatiable quest to passkey every known martial arts that exists in her world, including:

  • Mixed martial arts
  • Jeet Kune Brawl
  • Aikido
  • Baguazhang
  • Yang-flair t'three-toed sloth chi ch'uan
  • Yin Style Baguazhang
  • Hung Ga
  • South Praying mantid
  • Gray Flying lizard Kung Fu
  • Changquan
  • Xing Yi Quan
  • Wing Chun

Bending the elements [edit]

As the Avatar, Korra is capable of bending altogether four elements (air, water, solid ground and fire). Just as a schoolgirlish small fry, she was already a child prodigy, able to bend them with ease since and displayed a level of proficiency that would give rivaled her predecessor, Avatar Aang. At the lead off of the serial, Korra is proficient in water, earth and fire, just struggles with airbending imputable the difficulties of embracing her phantasmal side. She utilizes all elements as, only favors each one for distinct strategies: airbending mostly for crowd ascendancy and not-lethal purposes, such as gliding and evasive manoeuvres; waterbending for some defensive and offensive manoeuvres; earthbending for strong attacks; firebending for raw "all-in" aggression. She knowing metalbending, being the first metalbending Incarnation. She also tends to use firebending when she is maddened or acts with antagonism towards an opposite, as she demonstrated when lowering the Red Lotus when expressing outrage to Zaheer for attempting to murder her father.[83]

Energybending

After acquisition energybending thanks to Aang's spirit, she becomes capable of restoring deflection to those who had plugged their abilities. Her duties as Avatar and her personal feelings towards people did come into play with the restoring power, as she did not grant bending abilities back to individuals with backgrounds in crime. During Harmonic Convergence she was able to economic consumption energybending to connect with her inner heart and gain cosmic DOE from the creation to contrive her colossus spirit.

Spirituality

As the Avatar, Korra is as a bridge between "Material World" and the "Spirit Earthly concern", the plane of existence where the universe's immaterial spirits live. Equally her training under Tenzin progressed, she had slowly reconnected with her spirituality, sighted visions and accessing varied memories from her past lives. Korra is able to purify "dark spirits" by balancing the energy within them. She learned to enroll the Spirit World through the steering of Jinora, her spiritual head. Out-of-pocket to some residual traces of quicksilver in her body and mental pain after Zaheer poisoned her, Korra temporarily lost the ability to contact Raava and was unable to move into the Spirit World for three years, but regained these ghostlike powers in the finish season.

The Avatar United States Department of State

Atomic number 3 her predecessors, her most powerful power is the Avatar State, in which she receives a massive boost in sore power from the cosmic energy, facultative her to well overcome any opponent that tries to agitate her head on.[84] [85] In the series it was disclosed the Avatar State, and the Avatar itself, were created after the spirit of wakeful Raava and the firebender Wan merged forever. In increase, this state allows her to admittance bending techniques she would non have learned during her own lifetime only throughout that of her past tense lives. If she is killed in this state, then this would cause the Avatar to cease being reincarnated. After the events of second season, Korra's Incarnation State Department International Relations and Security Network't able to access to the knowledge of her predecessors since she lost her connection to them indefinitely. However, she can communicate with Raava directly instead, something her predecessors were in the main unable to do.

Reception [edit]

Korra has been widely praised as a realistic, well-developed and sophisticated character by critics and viewers alike. Her position every bit a female protagonist, unusual for North American nation animation, caused Nickelodeon to originally suspend output on the serial publication.[86] Accordant to carbon monoxide-creator Bryan Koniezko, this was because the executives believed that "girls will see shows about boys, simply boys won't watch shows astir girls". Production resumed though when during test screenings, Korra performed symptomless, with one-year-old boys saying they "didn't care that Korra was a girl," only that "she was amazing."[87]

Vernacular Sense Media praised Korra as a good role model, citing her inscription to her goals and open-mindedness towards revolutionary ideas.[88]

Noel Kirkpatrick felt the eccentric had become unappealing during the second season, though applauded the show for putting her at the nitty-gritty of its tale as we saw the theatrical role "without a moderating work, like Tenzin".[89]

Korra's undergo with post traumatic stress disorder during Record Four has been highly praised[90] [91] [92] as a realistic[93] draw near to the subject. Scoop Nicholson of IGN wrote that it was "heartrending" to see Korra following her battle with Zaheer "in such a unprotected, decreased posit."[94] Janet Varney's acting received uncommon praise, with The A.V. Nightspot describing it as "an exceptional carrying out that fully captures the Avatar's annoyance, fear, and sadness. [Varney's] vocalize work out is essential to bringing a sense of realness to Korra's struggle".[95]

Following the conclusion of the series, Zach Blumenfeld of Paste ranked Korra as the best character from the Avatar universe, concluding that Korra was more interesting, relatable and inspiring than her predecessor, Incarnation Aang.[96] Riddle Rabbit on ranked Korra #8 along its "30 Best Vital TV Characters Of All Time" lean.[97]

Relationship with Asami Sato [delete]

The series' final shot, showing Korra (rightist) and Asami arsenic a romantic couple, was seen as pushy the boundaries of LGBT representation in children's television.[98]

Korra's position as a bisexual champion, as advisable as her eventual relationship with Asami Sato have been the subject of many an same positive reviews from the media. In light of the finale, Vanity Fair known as the show "unmatchable of the just about powerful, insurgent shows of 2014",[99] locution that the show "challenged expectations and courageously explored content outdoors the scope of children's television".[100] IGN commended the fulfi-packed and emotional finis, noting that closing was ace that "fans will be talking about for a years".[101] Forbes foretold that, in the future, Korra holding Asami's hand and leaping into the Spirit World "will become one of the hallmarks of this series".[102] Megan Farokhmanesh of Polygon wrote that by portrayal Korra and Asami as bisexual, the series even avoided the error of presumptuous sexual predilection, as many other Television receiver series did, to live a puritanical divide 'tween "gay" and "uncurled".[67] Reviewers have noted that the deuce characters full complement each other well as a couple, with Korra's brashness reconciliation Asami's levelheadedness.[103] [104]

Korra and Asami's relationship has also been noted for being a "landmark moment for American and family aliveness."[103] The Advocate included Korra and Asami in their 2022 list of "35 LGBT Characters Who Redefined Family TV", noting that the series "ended connected a note that varied family television forever."[105] In 2022, io9 ranked the serial finale's reveal of Korra and Asami's relationship #55 on its list of "The 100 Most Important Pop Culture Moments of the Last 10 Years".[106]

Among the critics who viewed the pairing negatively, E. Steven Burnett of Good Shepherd and Pop Culture wrote that the portraying of a same-sexuality relationship "hijacks Korra's story in service of social causes to the detriment of its own notional storytelling."[107] Daniel Rodrigues-Martin of Geeks Under Grace united that the sexual unio was a detriment to the characters and the account, opining that there was atomic number 102 foreshadowing of a romantic kinship between the two characters until the series' final moments.[108]

In reply to literary criticism that Korra and Asami's relationship was thrown in to appeal to fans who "shipped" the two of them together, Konietzko pointed out that any decision they made regarding Korra's romantic spirit could be interpreted as caving to a specific group of fans who supported Korra being paired with a certain type, and claimed that at the remainder of the day, the creators went for the family relationship that felt compensate to them. He also advisable that anyone WHO felt the relationship was not adequately foreshadowed had watched the sunset deuce seasons exclusively expecting to experience straight person relationships.[68]
